Last summer, my internship was virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It goes without saying that all art&design festivals and conferences were also online. What makes it worse, it is still an ongoing situation! I have been highly frustrated that I cannot join any on-site experiences.

One benefit I noticed is that I can easily access watch design summits in different regions or countries. They might not be supposed to be held online if the virus did not exist. How can I optimize the advantage and redesign online design festival experiences?

  1. Redesign online design festival experience

Pain points? There is a lack of interactions between participants, unlike in-person experience. From a speaker’s perspective, they feel challenged to interact with the audience.

Painpoint 1: Visual-focused experience
Painpoint 2: One-way interaction

If solved, what would it do for people? New online experience would entertain and inspire people. It would be different from what on-site festivals have done. Also, people can efficiently interact with speakers and companies to expand their career-related connections.

Why is it worth solving? Because we cannot guarantee that there will be no virus pandemic even after COVID-19, it would enable people to rethink how they organize worldwide design festivals. If online experience is widely considered, underprivileged people over the globe can join popular summits and festivals at affordable prices.
